Tesla has officially introduced a new variant of its bold and futuristic pickup truck — the Cybertruck Long Range. This new base model comes with a rear-wheel-drive, single-motor setup and is priced at $71,985, making it about $10,000 cheaper than the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version.
350-Mile Range—With a Catch
Tesla claims the Cybertruck Long Range can cover up to 350 miles on a single charge, an increase of 25 miles over the AWD variant’s 325-mile range. However, this figure jumps to 362 miles only if owners install a $750 soft tonneau cover, which is shipped separately. Without it, the claimed range is 350 miles — still higher than the Cybertruck Beast model’s 320-mile maximum.
Performance Trade-Offs
The new variant ditches the front motor to rely solely on the rear-wheel-drive system. As a result:
- 0–60 mph time is 6.2 seconds
- Top speed is 112 mph
- Towing capacity drops to 7,500 pounds (compared to 11,000 pounds in AWD and tri-motor models)
To cut costs further, the air suspension has been swapped out for coil springs, resulting in a fixed ground clearance of 9.6 inches, as opposed to the adjustable 16 inches on higher-end models.
What’s Missing?
The Cybertruck Long Range also forgoes several premium features found in more expensive variants:
- No rear passenger display (9.4-inch screen)
- Cloth seats instead of premium upholstery (heated but not ventilated)
- 7-speaker sound system (down from 15 speakers)
- No power tonneau cover
- Slightly reduced cargo volume
- 18-inch wheels with all-season tires as standard (20-inch all-terrain optional, but reduces range by 19 miles)
Despite these compromises, the truck retains a 325 kW max charging speed, allowing users to add up to 147 miles of range in just 15 minutes — which is 10 miles more than what the AWD model can add in the same time.
Competitive Pricing
At $71,985, the Cybertruck Long Range sits close to the Rivian R1T’s base Adventure model (starting at $71,700). It’s still priced higher than Ford’s F-150 Lightning Pro (starting at $49,975) and even the XLT trim ($65,190), but it offers more range than both.
Availability
The Cybertruck Long Range is available to order now, with deliveries expected to begin in June 2025.
With this move, Tesla is aiming to make the Cybertruck more accessible, targeting a wider audience while maintaining its futuristic identity and powerful electric credentials.
